Revels was appointed by the Governor of Mississippi to a seat in the U.S. Senate. The seat vacated by Jefferson Davis. Sen. Revels left the Senate in 1871. In 1874 he realigned himself with the Democratic party. Hiram Revels died at age 74, in 1901.
