Appropriations For School Purposes This Year
"…The only opportunity that many of the people, white as well as colored, now have of acquiring the knowledge of elementary principles is through these schools. So far as the colored people are concerned, should it not be our effort to furnish them with some opportunity for improvement, and to make them useful as laborers and intelligent as voters? Suppose we do not; they out vote us in numbers; what would be the result if they choose to assert their right to the offices of the county….?"
