Richard B. Harrison, who plays “De Lawd” in The Green Pastures, gave the Negroes of Virginia and the South some interesting advice…. He counseled them to remain in the Southern States, and not to go northward in search of a mythical promised land….
"Thousands of Negroes who go North crowd into the large cities where they live in unsanitary slums and die from tuberculosis and other diseases. In the South where the cities are smaller and the percentage of population more largely rural they are perhaps to live in more healthful surroundings. Of course, there are disgraceful Negro slums in Dixie, but the Southern Negro is much more likely to live on the farm than the northern Negro…."
