  1. In 1817, in Washington, D.C. the American Colonization Society began operating as an organization dedicated to removing free blacks from the country. Organized with Bushrod Washington as president, Henry Clay and John Randolph of Roanoke. [Randolph lived most his life in Charlotte County, Va.]  The Society founded Liberia in 1821.  Some 15,000 were transported there.
