Negro, named Andrew Brand, who was born a slave in Jefferson County, but who by his inventive genius has become worth some $30,000.  He has built and run a flouring mill, secured two patents for plows, one of which he sold in 1884 for $4,000 and another in 1887 for $5,200.  He has invented a rotary engine, which is very simple, cost less, and is more cheaply run than other engines.  He has secured a patent.  He has also invented a process for coupling cars of different heights.
